A Millennium Commission project

Millennium Projects are the most visible part of the Millennium Commission's work - a host of buildings and environmental schemes in which over £1.3 billion of National Lottery money has been invested.

The Millennium Commission only had enough funds to support one in ten of the applications it received. Projects had to show public support and celebrate our heritage while taking us forward into the future and creating a lasting legacy for the UK. The Millennium Commission's contribution represented up to 50% of the cost of each project and the balance had to be raised by the projects.

Brains

Brains became the first Welsh company to appear on the Welsh National Jersey in 2004 signing to become the Official Sponsor of the Welsh National Rugby Team and Official Ale of the Millennium Stadium. This partnership created a strong relationship between two of the most famous brands in Wales, demonstrated in the 2005 and 2008 Grand Slam winning season.

Founded in 1882 Brains has grown to become the largest producer of real ale in Wales, owning more than 200 pubs across the country with their landmark brewery still in the heart of Cardiff, walking distance from the Home of Welsh rugby, Millennium Stadium.

Wales's RBS Six Nations clash against Scotland at the Millennium Stadium in 2006 saw Carling pour their three millionth pint within the Stadium grounds.

SWALEC

In March 2008 Wales leading energy company SWALEC became the Official Community Partner of the WRU, sponsoring the SWALEC Cup and National Leagues, international age grade teams and  national women’s side. In May 2009 the Millennium Stadium switched to SWALEC’s green energy tariff. As a result parent company Scottish and Southern, the leading generator of renewable energy in the UK, has committed to match the energy used by the Millennium Stadium by generating the same amount of energy from large-scale Hydro sources.  

Their sponsorship also saw the return of the SWALEC Cup in May this year, with the new addition of Bowl and Cup competitions, which made for a fantastic occasion at the Millennium Stadium. The Welsh National club competition was last branded as the SWALEC Cup in 1999, when the trophy was won by Swansea who defeated Llanelli by 37 points to 10 at Ninian Park in Cardiff.

The agreement sees SWALEC extend its portfolio of over 1 million Welsh customers by providing the power to the Millennium Stadium, home of the Welsh Dragons.
