Millennium Stadium is pleased to announce that Wales & Lions greats Rob Howley and Scott Quinnell will head up a star-studded British & Irish line-up against a World XV this coming June.
Legends of rugby Mick Galwey, Bryan Redpath, Jim Williams, Raphael Ibanez, Craig Dowd and Trevor Leota are just a few of the 40-strong party who have already pledged their support to the pair and there are set to be guest appearances from all-time rugby greats such as Will Carling and Ieuan Evans.
Britain & Ireland v The World is the latest match in the Millennium Stadium "Tribute to Rugby's Legends Series" and follows on from the success of the Neil Jenkins-Jason Leonard "Battle of the Centurions" match last June.
The afternoon of entertainment on Sunday 5th June 2005 will also include matches involving junior clubs of the former Wales Captains plus a Dream Team clash pitting Llanelli: Past & Present against Bridgend: Past & Present. It promises to be one of the greatest line-ups of professional rugby playing talent to ever assemble outside the Test arena as the stars flock to join the party to honour Wales and Lions legends Howley and Quinnell.
Last year’s inaugural ‘Tribute to the Legends’ game saw a crowd of almost 30,000 revel in an extraordinary exhibition of running rugby as a Neil Jenkins XV drew 80-80 with a Jason Leonard XV. The world record breaking Jenkins and Leonard are already in light training as they prepare to join the action again in June, while former Munster and Ireland favourite Mick Galwey is also putting in some work to get ready to add his considerable experience to the occasion.
Quinnell senior - former Wales and Lions No. 8 Derek - will take charge of the Britain & Ireland XV as coach, and is also likely to make a guest appearance on the field with his three sons Scott Craig and Gavin, providing the unique achievement of having all the Quinnells on the field at the same time.
Joost Van der Westhuizen will be coming to Cardiff to play for The World XV. The former Springbok No. 9 will line-up alongside All Black legend Christian Cullen, fellow Kiwi Mark Donaldson, Samoan hooker Trevor Leota, Australian star Jim Williams and Springbok prop Robbie Kempson. In addition, former Scotland Football International Ally McCoist will don a pair of rugby boots to add to the spectacle. The former Glasgow Rangers ace will be on hand to take conversions.
Former Wales and Lions great Rob Howley said: “I met Ally on 'A Question of Sport' a while ago and he is a friend of my former Wasps team-mate, Scotland international Kenny Logan. He has a burning ambition to play a game of rugby – and to play at the Millennium Stadium. When I asked him if he would take some conversions, he asked whether I wanted him to take them with his right or left foot! He will be part of the Britain and Ireland team and I’m sure he will find some familiar faces in the side."
